this is my creative writing environment
hi all, this is my creative writing environment (and hence, the environment in which i'm writing my nanowrimo novel):
my creative writing environment

vi, full-screen, with my notes in the left pane and my novel in the right pane.

full-screen terminal app courtesy of james mccombe, named GL Terminal (for those of you interested, it's a prototype apple developer project that arstechnica dusted off for full-screen GTD goodness a while ago. i hope james updates it someday.)

it's not mac-like, but it's super productive for writing, at least for me. no distractions (although i can switch to other workspaces to do other things like look at the time or look up a word online), no mousing around, just pure keyboard interaction. i would also welcome using VIAllOver with something like WriteRoom, for a slightly more mac-like experience.

so, what does your creative workspace look like?

how do you split vi vertically like that?

:vsplit
makes a new, empty pane next to your current one.

:vsplit file_to_use
opens file named file_to_use in a new, empty pane next to your current one.

ctrl-ww switches around between panes.

is this a vim thing, or do most vis do this?
