[info]poeticdream is no longer using livejournal. She started using it before I did, back in 2001. She has almost 3000 posts (I have slightly less than half that number, despite having had mine almost as long). She's writing in a paper journal now, as she often has. Why? SUP, since they have bought Livejournal have reversed previous SixApart and LJ practices and business decisions. Notably in the case of basic users (which were ad-free), SUP recently switched these accounts to sponsored overnight with no notice. Now, from the company which once promised to remain ad-free forever, you have the option of either liking ads with your journal, or paying for the privilege of your creative content remaining ad-free.

Sorry guys, but you're going to have to throw in a lot more added benefit than just "no ads" for me to want to pay to have a journal. I'm seriously giving thought to hosting my journal on private webspace. I don't know if i'm retro chic enough to revert to paper like Robin.

note to self: someone else's filtered friends-only posts only work right when you don't leave yourself logged in.

oops. sorry, folks.

interest cloud redux

cheese, gordita
i just made a simple edit to the interest cloud i posted a few days ago to make more visible the unusual interests (thus highlighting more obscure interests), which is the reverse of the original intent (to highlight popular interests).

i think it's more interesting (pun fully intended) my way:

did someone say "tag clouds"?

  • Jan. 20th, 2006 at 9:08 PM
polaroid, robin
i'm sure you'll agree that livejournal's default layout for the tags page is not the most user-friendly. who enjoys scrolling past 6 pages of tags to find the most popular ones?

without further ado, check out the tag cloud!

thanks a bunch, [info]poeticdream, for the paid account ;-)
without it i would not be able to do such cool hacks.

[info]brad rocks. he just hacked up a continuous stream of the latest lj phoneposts!

a transcript of a phonepost from a random user ([info]mrfantastico):
it's 3:18. why am i not sleeping? i don't know. nobody answered that question because i'm not talking to anybody at the moment. except for the internet, and you. but not really because when you listen to this it'll be another time and it'll be like the past, and like i'm talking to the future, which is creepy and kinda weird.

i'm going to eat more pudding right now! come on, stupid pudding, come here! gimme! haha!

most of them are like that; somewhat profound, somewhat stupid. it's audio zeitgeist!

go, listen!

scream, abby, yawn
[info]abigail_m just made her first proper, real, posting-as-herself post. I don't know how "C-store" got in there as i turned the screen brightness off and the keyboard brightness up so she wouldn't get distracted. all i know is i heard a lot of system beeps while she was doing it.

i need new abby icons.

oh no, my account expired!

my derivative of the tranquility style is the best!

okay, so it was a really simple hack to tranquility, but i missed seeing which user icon i had posted each entry with. if my friends can see it on their friends page, and it shows up on each individual entry page, why can't it be on my main journal page? the answer, my friends, is "now it can!"

check out my main journal page, if you're not already reading this there, to see what the hell i'm talking about.

not to toot my own horn, but *toot toot*.

this is my message to Mr. Andrei Zaitsev, of news-feeds.net. some of you who have instructed lj not to let bots index your journals might find it interesting.
Mr. Zaitsev,

My livejournal rss feed is on your site at http://news-feeds.net/feed.php/14432/.

It has apparently been duplicated from http://www.livejournal.com/users/riffraff/data/rss.

The problem is that I instructed livejournal to not let robots/spiders (google) index my journal. When my journal is duplicated onto your site it is not blocked from being indexed. Therefore the contents of my journal are showing up on google, which I do not want.

I understand that you are performing a useful service in hosting feeds found elsewhere, but please kindly remove my feed. Thank you.

Kim Slawson

i'm trying to figure out whether this is livejournal's fault for not providing the "no-bots" message to the rss reader, or (more likely) the other site's fault for simply duplicating the feeds for every journal it finds. i'm leaning toward the latter.

news-feeds.net is very spartan, with no "about", "faq", or webmaster contact info. i had to do a whois query to find andrei's email. so, no bonus points on that matter, either.

i'll keep you posted with any followups.

EDIT: now i'm really pissed... the email to the contact for the domain (Andrei) bounced. grumble grumble stab stab... *digs in whois further*

EDIT EDIT: 3 more email addresses bounced later, and i'm ready to kill. instead i left him voicemail. at least abby will have a dad who isn't in jail for stabby pointy death-dealing.

nifty lj things
